"enjoy ultra-pure water in your home with reverse osmosis"
WHOLE HOUSE REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMTrying to decide if you need a whole house reverse osmosis system? This article explores the benefits and downside of a
whole house reverse osmosis system to help you decide if it’s the best solution for your particular needs.
Whole House Reverse Osmosis System or Whole House Water Filter System
System BenefitsA reverse osmosis (RO) system is intended to produce ultra-pure water by removing virtually all unhealthy impurities. Consuming
RO water is beneficial to your health and it enhances the flavors of cooked foods and beverages. Reverse osmosis also
eliminates water-related problems such as odors, scaling or mineral deposits. Learn more about reverse osmosis here.
By comparison, whole house water filter systems are intended to remedy specific water-related problems in the home.
They soften water, and remove objectionable impurities such as chlorine, fluoride, sediment and odor.
DisadvantagesAlthough they remove a significant amount of contaminants from water, unlike reverse osmosis systems, whole house water
filter systems are not capable of providing ultra-pure water. Whole house reverse osmosis systems can provide water that is
purer than whole house water filter systems, but they also have disadvantages.

The water to be treated by an RO system must be pre-treated to remove certain contaminants that could damage or destroy the RO semi-permeable membrane. To produce ultra-pure water, an RO system forces water molecules through a semi-permeable
membrane that contains pores sized as small as 0.0001 microns. Only molecules the size of water molecules or smaller can
pass through the membrane. This action removes salts, bacteria, virus and other undesirable contaminants from water,
depositing them on the face of the semi-permeable membrane.
Water continuously flushes contaminants off of the membrane surface to keep it clean. Much of this wash water typically goes down
the drain. A whole house RO system can send 3 gallons of water, or more, to the drain for every 1 gallon of pure water it produces.
Finally, a whole house reverse osmosis system requires significantly more maintenance than a whole house water filter system.
By comparison, a whole house water filter system contains filter media with much larger pores sized 10-30 microns.
It can accommodate most conditions of tap water with no pre-treatment necessary.
There is no wasted water to go down the drain.
RO Water is ExpensiveAlthough reverse osmosis water is ultra-pure, the added cost of required pre-conditioning, the wasted water sent to the drain, and the
higher maintenance costs makes it far more expensive than water filtered by a whole house water filter system.
Reverse Osmosis water is too expensive to use for bathing, laundry, toilet flushing and other general uses
when properly filtered water is perfectly suitable for these uses.
